Urban planning in Manchester

“I joined CBRE in Manchester in July as an Assistant Planner (on their Graduate scheme). My duties include assisting the team in the delivery of large-scale, complex, residential, commercial and mixed-use schemes for a variety of private and public sector clients.”

What were your career goals whilst you were an undergraduate?

To be working as a planning consultant in the private sector (I only developed this during my final year, after being exposed to more urban planning modules and securing work experience in a relevant field).

What interaction or support did you receive from Careers Network when you were an undergraduate?

I received one-to-one CV advice, undertook mock interviews with industry experts and
attended career fairs.

What made you choose to undertake the Masters degree?

The RTPI accredited course (a requirement of most graduate schemes).  How has the MSc helped you achieve your career?  It provided me with exposure to professional practitioners and also networking events. I also gained experience undertaking ‘real-life’ assignments such as development appraisal, briefing notes, urban design brief.

What advice would you offer to undergraduates interested in a career in planning?  Secure a work experience placement during or before you embark on the Masters. This experience will be invaluable during interviews as it will show the company that you can apply yourself to professionalworking life and it will give you the opportunity to discuss the projects that you worked on.
