Last week saw the Autumn Careers fair, running from 14th – 15th October, with the Science and Technology fair following shortly after on the 21st. We welcomed 55 employers each day of the Autumn Fair, and had over 3,200 students attending overall. Students were keen to meet employers with a final flurry coming through the doors at 3.20pm on the second day! The Science, Engineering and Technology Fair welcomed another 55 employers and over 1,200 students (see videos on right). It’s safe to say that these fairs are very popular, and that’s because they’re very useful! As the representatives from Aimia noted,
“There are a lot of good people here, some of whom we’ve met today”, so these fairs can be used to make an impression on an employer!
What can students learn from fairs? Other than being an introduction to employers, students can also learn about the application processes of large companies and the sort of skills they’re looking for. All of the employers that Careers Network spoke to on the day said that having a broad set of skills is essential for any form of Graduate Placement. Additionally, Aitkens and CH2M note that for certain specific schemes, holding a relevant Masters is at the very least hugely advantageous, and at most almost essential.
The next Careers Fairs will be the Business, finance and consultancy fair on Wednesday 28th October (11:00-15:30), and the Law Fair on Wednesday 11th November (13:00-15:30). A collections of clips from the fairs can be found at http://bit.ly/1POLvdW
